As the Lake Forest College basketball season draws to a close, so does the career of star guard Sean Espinosa ’22. A team captain since 2019, Espinosa will finish his career with the Foresters with the third-most points (1,616) and the most assists (475) in school history. This season, Espinosa has led the team in points per game (20.0), assists per game (4.4) and minutes per game (36.9). Stentor staff recently talked to Espinosa about his successful career and plans for the future.

Stentor: Where are you from?

Espinosa: I’m from Pasadena, California

Stentor: What’s your major?

Espinosa: I’m a communication major and an entrepreneurship minor.

Stentor: How long have you been playing basketball?

Espinosa: I’ve been playing basketball since I was around 3 years old.

Stentor: What is your favorite part about playing for the basketball team?

Espinosa: My favorite part about playing for the basketball team are the friendships and brotherhood that is formed by everyone on the team.

Stentor: What has been your favorite moment on the basketball team?

Espinosa: My favorite moment is winning the conference tournament my sophomore year and playing in the NCAA tournament.

Stentor: What are your plans for after graduation?

Espinosa: I hope to play professionally overseas somewhere, not sure where, but hopefully I get the opportunity to continue doing what I love to do and be able to travel at the same time.

Stentor: How does it feel to be third all-time for Lake Forest College men’s basketball in points and first in assists?

Espinosa: It feels great, knowing that all the hard work I put in has paid off. But it also shows how great and talented are the teammates I’ve been able to play with during my time here— setting me up to score and them scoring when I set them up. I couldn’t have done anything without them.

Stentor: What do you hope your legacy will be as a Lake Forest College basketball player?

Espinosa: I hope to be remembered as one of the best to ever play here and someone that gave it their all every time they stepped on the court.

Stentor: What is one thing you’re most proud of from your time on the basketball team?

Espinosa: I’m most proud of the culture that I’m leaving behind. It started when I was a freshman and sophomore with players like Danny Sotos, Jordan Moran, and Chad Bauchan and then continued on with Sam Hustings, and Aram Arslanian. Seeing the culture that these guys ahead of me worked so hard to instill and build in this program of working hard, leaving it all on the floor, holding yourself and your teammates accountable, and, lastly, playing for your teammates and not yourself when you’re out there. I hope I carried on and showed this culture to the younger guys on the team and they can continue to help this program keep excelling.
