Lake Forest College senior women’s basketball player Kelsey Burton ’21 has recently moved into the third spot in program history for points. Burton sits at 1,139 points in her college career, including 14.3 points per game this season.
She also currently leads the team with 8.3 rebounds per game, has been named Forester Athlete of the Week four times, and ranks in the top 10 all-time in rebounds, assists, steals, and three-pointers.
Stentor Staff interviewed Burton, a communications major and gender, sexuality, and women’s studies minor from Pendleton, Indiana, about her accomplished career and playing amidst a global pandemic.
Stentor: What are your plans for after graduation?
Burton: After graduation, I plan on getting a job in marketing and PR.
Stentor: How long have you been playing basketball?
Burton: I have been playing basketball since I was seven years old!
Stentor: What has been your best memory with the Lake Forest women’s basketball team?
Burton: The best memory I have with my team would be going to Hawaii and playing! We went in December of 2018 and it was just so amazing to experience it, especially with my best friends.
Stentor: How has the pandemic changed the way you go about playing?
Burton: It hasn’t changed how I play. I would say in regard to having only eight games, it has made me go harder in each game!
Stentor: How different is it playing without fans in the stands this season?
Burton: It’s very weird not having people at the games. Again, with it being my senior year, I was looking forward to my family coming up and seeing my few games, but I completely understand why they can’t.
Stentor: What does it mean to be named Forester Athlete of the Week four times?
Burton: It’s an honor every time I get it. Knowing that my hard work doesn’t go unnoticed by the athletic department. It always makes me want to play even better in my next games.
Stentor: How does it feel to be the Top 10 in program history in so many different categories?Burton: I honestly don’t keep track of my stats. I had no idea where I landed in the records, and when I got my 1,000th point, I did not even know I was close to that. I play basketball because I love the game, but it is nice knowing that my hard work has paid off in these four seasons!
