As the 2022-23 Lake Forest College basketball season draws to a close, so do the careers of several seniors. Perhaps none of whom were more impactful to their team than Katie Neher ’23. Neher finished her senior season averaging a Midwest Conference-high 20.9 points per game. Overall, she finished with 501 points on the season, the 3rd-most in the history of Lake Forest women’s basketball and was finally able to cross the 1,000-career point threshold in the season finale against Grinnell. Stentor staff talked to Neher about her accomplishments on the court, and the team moving forward.

Stentor: Where are you from?

Neher: I am from Kokomo, Indiana.

Stentor: What’s your major?

Neher: I am a major in environmental studies with a double minor in politics and legal studies.

Stentor: What are your plans for after graduation?

Neher: After graduating, I am moving to Pagosa Springs, Colorado to pursue a career in the environmental nonprofit world.

Stentor: How long have you been playing basketball?

Neher: I have been playing basketball since I was 4 years old.

Stentor: What has been your favorite memory playing for the basketball team?

Neher: My favorite memory playing basketball at Lake Forest College would be our trip to Hawaii. We had some really fun days and won 2 games.

Stentor: What would you say is the biggest way you’ve grown your game over the past 4 years?

Neher: I would say my overall confidence, not only as a basketball player, but as a leader has been the area in which I have grown most in the last 4 years.

Stentor: You’ve earned Forester Athlete of the Week and MWC Performer of the Week honors many times, as well as being named USBWA National Player of the Week. What does it mean to have received so much recognition for your play?

Neher: It is really exciting, and I am honored to have received these awards this year, but it is all a testament to what we collectively do as a team and I could not have done any of it without my teammates.

Stentor: How do you hope you will be remembered after graduation, both on and off the court?

Neher: I hope to be remembered as a good leader who was supportive and picked up my people when they needed it.

Stentor: What advice do you have for future Lake Forest Women’s Basketball players?

Neher: The only advice I feel like I can give is to savor every moment, even the ones that may not feel the best. There is so much to learn from competing at the collegiate level — a lot more than just winning and losing.
