The recent construction of Mohr Field is an exciting step not only for the College but also for several sports teams, including the brand-new men’s and women’s varsity lacrosse teams. While lacrosse will not hit the field for some time, the softball and soccer teams are already taking advantage of the new field.
Hannah Kalnicky ’21, who led the softball team in at-bats and doubles in the 2020 season that was ultimately shortened due to COVID-19, will be one of the seniors leading the team this spring for their upcoming season. Stentor staff interviewed Kalnicky, a business and politics double major from Bolingbrook, Illinois, about her thoughts on the new field and her plans for after school.
Stentor: How long have you been playing softball?
Kalnicky: I have been playing softball for 15 years.
Stentor: What is your favorite part about playing softball at Lake Forest College?
Kalnicky: My favorite part about playing softball at Lake Forest [College] is the relationships I’ve built with my teammates over the past four years and how the team truly embodies being a family.
Stentor: What does the recent construction of Mohr Field mean to you and your team?
Kalnicky: The new field is going to be great for our program. It’ll allow us to do a lot more with all of the new additions that were added and I’m really excited to get to play on it for my senior year.
Stentor: What are your plans for after graduation?
Kalnicky: After graduation, I plan on getting my master’s degree from Lake Forest and then applying for law school after that.
Stentor: How have you dealt with the completely remote semester?
Kalnicky: The completely remote semester is challenging, but I have been keeping my routine the same as if we were on campus. I also try to get out and spend more time with family and friends, when I can.
Stentor: Considering the pandemic, is the lead-up to this upcoming season different than previous seasons?
Kalnicky: With the pandemic, it is definitely different. The preparation is different because we are unable to be together as a team, but we are all holding each other accountable to make sure that everyone is preparing how we normally would when we’re all together.
Stentor: The bases are loaded. There are two outs in the final inning of the game. You’re at the plate. What is going through your mind?
Kalnicky: In that situation, I try to keep my mind calm and not get too anxious and relax and have confidence in myself as a player.
