The Great Lakes Adaptive Sports Association, or GLASA, is a local program that works to create a safe and healthy environment for those suffering from physical and visual disabilities.
GLASA follows the motto “Let No One Sit on The Sidelines” to encourage community members to take part in their disability-based sports and recreational programs.
The Lake Forest College Athletic Department is once again partnering with GLASA to host the 10th annual “The Sleds Are Coming” sled hockey tournament. The event will take place at 2 p.m. on Sunday, February 9 at the Alumni Memorial Field House (Ice Rink).
This year’s event is titled “The Sleds Are Coming . . . Again.”
An on-ice competition comprised of three 12-minute periods of 5-on-5 sled hockey, this event is one of the biggest hosted every winter season. Current GLASA Falcons athletes will be participating in the tournament.
“The community is brought together because of this event and makes for an awesome experience for Lake Forest College students, spectators, community members, but most importantly the athletes competing,” said women’s hockey player Jacqueline Rogers ’20.
During one of the two intermissions, the Falcons youth hockey team will have the chance to scrimmage on the ice in front of family, friends, and fans.
“At the other intermission, there will be a ‘Chuck-A-Puck’ contest. Each year GLASA also presents what is called the J.J. O’Connor Awards, and the Lake Forest College Athletic Department will be the recipients of the award this year,” said Lake Forest College Athletic Program Coordinator Amanda Walker.
A fun opportunity to get involved, the event is free and open to the public, including Lake Forest College students and athletes. The event continuously draws in a large crowd of cheering fans year after year.
“I think this event is a very fun occasion for the entire student body and athletes to come together and give the sled hockey players an atmosphere that they rarely get to play in,” said hockey player Max Cavallini ’22. “It is an event that I look forward to, my teammates and friends look forward to, and I’m sure the participating players enjoy, as well.”
