In an attempt to remain competitive within the higher education sector, Lake Forest College has recently announced its newest plan to adapt to the ever-changing and technologically crazed world. Starting in the Fall 2015 semester, the college’s first-year studies program, which is designed to transition students from high school to college and prepare them for the daunting four years ahead, will undergo some changes.
Currently, the FIYS program emphasizes the development of college level writing skills, as well as critical reading abilities, and effective presentation techniques. However, both opponents and supporters of the program agreed that it was no longer effective and changes to the existing curriculum were necessary.
Incoming first-year students will no longer have the privilege of choosing from a list of 15 unique and occasionally irrelevant course topics taught by various members of each department on campus.
Instead, all first-year students will be required to take “Social Media and Personal Branding in the 21st Century” in place of the existing FIYS courses. This course, nicknamed the “selfie class,” will emphasize the most efficient ways to utilize social media and tailor social media profiles for things such as catfishing, Facebook creeping, gaining more followers on Instagram and Twitter, and of course, how to take the best selfie.
One aspect within the class will also highlight how to properly promote the Forester Five. Those opposed to such a controversial change have already begun questioning the practicality of such a class, but it should also be mentioned that the College includes “improving your LinkedIn page” and “creating effective eBay listings” in the course description, which are arguably legitimate and useful life skills.
This cutting-edge program renovation is seen by school officials as a way to ensure that the College remains on the frontlines of development and innovation in higher education curriculums in order to attract high-caliber students and top-notch athletes to the college. The course not only will serve as a way to develop the technological skills of incoming students, but will aid in the reduction of the College’s current budget deficits.
In conjunction with the plans to revamp the first-year studies program, school officials have also announced that the College’s marketing and admissions budgets will be cut drastically because “Social Media and Personal Branding in the 21st Century” will ensure that Lake Forest College is promoted by each and every student that attends the College through the use of social media.
This will give perspective students real-life examples of life at LFC and show the Forest Five in full effect both on campus and off. It is unclear how these drastic changes will affect Lake Forest College, but it appears that they may be foreshadowing even greater changes to come.
