Hello Everyone,
This is our final issue of the semester and my last issue as Editor-in-Chief of the Stentor. Serving as the Editor-in-Chief of the Stentor has been the highlight of my college career, and I will forever cherish the opportunity to serve the campus community in this position.
As you will read in this issue’s Senior Spotlight article, I have the amazing opportunity both to graduate a full year early from Lake Forest College, with a double-major in Politics and in Environmental Studies and a minor in Legal Studies, and to attend the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign College of Law this coming fall. I plan to pursue a career as an environmental attorney, focusing on environmental justice issues.
Despite the challenges of the pandemic, which, for the first time in the Stentor’s 134-year history, necessitated we pivot to exclusively digital publication during the last half of the spring 2020 semester and for the entirety of the fall 2020 semester, our publication remained strong and true to our mission as serving as the voice of Lake Forest College.
Thanks to the tireless dedication of the Stentor’s staff, we were able to return to print publication this semester despite the majority of the editorial board either being remote or living off-campus, just as we were incredibly fortunate to have a committed on-campus staff this semester who ensured that print copies were distributed around campus.
The Stentor has grown exponentially due to its amazing staff. In addition to receiving the incredible honor of a Best of Show award from the Associated College Press for our Issue 5, we have increased our social media presence (Instagram @lfc_stentor and Facebook @lfcstentor1857), expanded our staff, entered into partnerships with the College’s Journalism courses, returned paid ads to the print edition, and maintained our digital edition on stentornews.com. Overall, I am incredibly proud of what we have been able to accomplish in these challenging times and even more grateful for the support of the entire campus community.
Additionally, I am proud to announce that Adam Hartzer ’23, the Stentor’s current Managing Editor and Layout Editor, will move into the position of Editor-in-Chief for Fall 2021. Adam brings a wealth of experience as a student journalist, and I am confident that the Stentor is in good hands under Adam’s leadership.
Thank you all for your continued support of the Stentor. It has truly been an honor to serve as Editor-in-Chief.
With gratitude,
Emma G. Overton ’21
