First-year women’s golfer Chloe Morrissey ’24 was recently named St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) Player of the Week. Morrissey earned this honor after her even-par 72 helped the Foresters finish as the runners-up at the Marian Invite.

Additionally, Morrissey is on pace to post a scoring average of 81.50 shots per round, which would shatter the Lake Forest record by nearly two shots. Stentor staff interviewed Morrissey about her success on the golf course.

Stentor: Where are you from?

Morrissey: I’m from Gurnee, Illinois.

Stentor:  What is your major?

Morrissey: My majors are political science and communication.

Stentor: How long have you been golfing?

Morrissey: I’ve been golfing since I was 5-years-old.

Stentor: Besides golf, what is your favorite thing to do in your free time?

Morrissey: Besides golf, I love hanging out with my friends and boyfriend whether it be on fun nights out or relaxing days in.

Stentor:  What is the hardest part about playing golf?

Morrissey: The hardest part of playing golf is the mental game. You can have all the skill in the world, but having a strong mental game is just as important, [if]not more important.

Stentor: What does it mean to you to be named the SLIAC Player of the Week?

Morrissey: It was definitely a crazy feeling to be named player of the week in our conference. To be chosen out of so many players from a number of different schools really meant a lot to me, and definitely motivated me to want to accomplish more great things.

Stentor: What is your favorite part about being on the Lake Forest women’s golf team?

Morrissey: My favorite thing about being a part of the team is being able to go out and golf and being surrounded by a great group of girls and coaches while doing it. They always support me and are there to lift me up on my bad days and are always cheering me on during the good days.

Stentor: What was it like beginning college in the middle of a pandemic?

Morrissey: Starting college in the middle of a pandemic was definitely a strange experience. Trying to adjust to college is already a big change and having a pandemic to deal with on top of that definitely made it more difficult.

Stentor: What is going through your mind before a big putt?

Morrissey: Nothing beats the feeling of sinking a big putt, whether it be a birdie putt or a clutch putt for par. Before a big putt, I try to keep myself as calm as possible. Even though the nerves are definitely there, I block them out as much as possible and just focus on the shot that’s in front of me. Most of the time I think things like, “you already made this putt” or “this isn’t going anywhere besides in the hole” before I even hit it. But, of course, I’m also guilty of thinking things like, “don’t miss,” too!
