Comic books have introduced a new world of entertainment ever since Marvel and DC were born, maybe even before then. Some are focused on laughs, like the funnies we see in newspapers, but the ones we know are mostly about superheroes. Here are a few of them that you might want to watch.
“Arrow” (The CW)
Based on the DC comics, “Arrow” follows the story of Oliver Queen and his fight against evil and corruption in Starling City. After his boat gets shipwrecked in the middle of the ocean, Oliver Queen (played by Stephen Amell) becomes stranded on an island for five years, where he learns how to skillfully use a bow and arrow. After he is rescued, Oliver comes back as a changed man: a hero and guardian of Starling City. The first two seasons are available for streaming on Netflix, while season 3 is currently airing (some episodes are free to watch on The CW’s website). The show has been picked up for season 4.
“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” (ABC)
After the events of “The Avengers,” Agent Phil Coulson is alive. How, you might ask? Well, I can’t tell you without spoiling the show. What I can tell you is that after “The Avengers,” the whole world now knows about Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and the enemies they make. The thing is, not every avenger in the Marvel Cinematic Universe can take care of every threat. So, it’s up to Agent Coulson (played, again, by Clark Gregg) and his team to help take down villains and evil organizations to save the world. Season 1 of “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D.” is available for streaming on Netflix, while the show is currently airing season 2 (some episodes can be watched on ABC On Demand).
“A.K.A. Jessica Jones” (Netflix)
Over the past few months, there have been news reports on the development of the new Marvel Netflix show “A.K.A Jessica Jones.” It is based off the comic book character of the same name, Jessica Jones. The show will take place during her post-superhero life as she tries to begin again as a private investigator.
Krysten Ritter (Breaking Bad, Big Eyes, Gilmore Girls, Veronica Mars) will star as the female heroin, alongside Mike Colter (The Good Wife, Zero Dark Thirty, Men in Black) as Luke Cage, Rachael Taylor (Charlie’s Angels, Crisis, 666 Park Avenue) as Patricia Walker, and David Tennant (Doctor Who, Broadchurch, Gracepoint) as the villain, Purple Man. “A.K.A. Jessica Jones” is set to stream on Netflix in 2015.
“Daredevil” (Netflix)
Daredevil, his real identity being Matthew Michael Murdock, is a hero in the Marvel universe (despite his name and costume). His powers involve super human senses such as touch, smell, and hearing. The only sense that is not enhanced is his sight, due to the fact that Daredevil is blind.
The story of “Daredevil” is simple. A blind lawyer with his powers will fight crime as Daredevil. Not much is known about the series aside from the cast, a photo or two, and one very quick teaser/poster. Charlie Cox (The Theory of Everything, Boardwalk Empire) will play Daredevil, and will co-star with Deborah Ann Woll (True Blood) as Karen Page, and Elden Henson (The Butterfly Effect, The Hunger Games Part 1, Jobs) as Foggy Nelson. “Daredevil” is set to stream on Netflix in 2015.
“Supergirl” (CBS)
CBS has picked up a new series based on the DC comics called “Supergirl.” The show will focus on Kara Zor-El, or Supergirl, and her life and adventures on Earth. The premise sounds a lot like fellow DC TV show “Smallville.” Unlike “Smallville,” however, this show will have Kara embracing her powers and fighting enemies to protect the world, instead of exploring teenage life (similar to “Arrow” and “The Flash”). The show will star Melissa Benoist (Glee, Whiplash) as Supergirl, and Mehcad Brooks (Desperate Housewives, Necessary Roughness, True Blood) as Jimmy Olsen. The rest of the characters are still being cast. The show is expected to air in 2015.
